Did You Know? Heat Is One of the Most Serious Hazards on a Commercial Job Site

Did you know that construction crews face a disproportionate risk from extreme heat compared to almost any other industry? Construction workers make up only about 6 percent of the U.S. workforce, but they’ve accounted for more than a third of all occupational heat-related deaths recorded between 1992 and 2016. More recently, OSHA investigated over a thousand heat-related injuries, illnesses, and fatalities across U.S. workplaces between 2017 and 2022, including more than 200 fatalities.

This is a big part of why commercial contractors restructure their schedules in July. Concrete pours, roofing, and other exposed exterior work often start at sunrise to avoid working through the hottest, most humid part of the day. Crews get built-in hydration breaks, and supervisors watch for early signs of heat stress rather than waiting for someone to feel sick.

If you’re planning a commercial project this summer, it’s worth asking your contractor how they manage crew safety and scheduling around heat. A contractor with a real plan for it tends to also be the one who keeps your project on track.

Remodel or Build New? A Decision Guide for Omaha Business and Commercial Property Owners

Right now, in the middle of Nebraska’s peak storm season, a lot of commercial property owners are getting an unplanned reminder of where their building stands. Hail data going back to 1955 shows that May, June, and July account for roughly 70 percent of all hail events in Nebraska, which means this is exactly the stretch when roofs and building envelopes get tested hardest. For many owners, that’s the moment the remodel-versus-rebuild question stops being theoretical.

Remodeling makes sense when the structure itself is sound but no longer serves the operation inside it: an outdated office layout, an inefficient warehouse flow, or a roof replacement that’s a natural opportunity to also handle the HVAC and insulation upgrades you’ve been putting off. Remodeling lets you keep a location your customers already know, and commercial remodels can often be phased to keep the business running during construction.

New construction is the better call when limitations go beyond what a remodel can fix, structural damage, a landlocked site, or code and accessibility issues that would require rebuilding anyway. If a storm has compromised the frame rather than just the roof or finishes, new construction sometimes makes more financial sense than chasing repairs.

Timing matters most right now because exterior work moves at the mercy of the forecast during storm season, and demand is high: 45.2 percent of all construction establishments in Nebraska are concentrated in the Omaha-Council Bluffs metro, meaning crews and materials are in heaviest demand right when storms are doing the most damage. An experienced contractor builds weather buffer days into the schedule and sequences work so rain delays on one phase don’t stall the whole project.

If your Omaha business is weighing this decision, Prairie Construction is happy to walk the property, including an assessment if recent weather is part of the conversation, and give you an honest read on what makes sense.

Planning a Construction Project in 2026? What Omaha Property Owners Should Do in January

Start the Year Off Right: Planning Your 2026 Construction Project.

January is the perfect month to set your construction plans in motion. While the weather may be cold, careful preparation now can save time, money, and stress later. Omaha property owners have unique considerations during winter months, and planning early ensures your project runs smoothly when warmer weather arrives.

  1. Review your property goals
  2. Budget and secure financing
  3. Select the right contractors
  4. Plan permits and approvals
  5. Schedule a pre-construction inspection

January is about preparation, not just waiting for the snow to melt. By planning carefully, Omaha property owners can ensure their 2026 construction projects start on time, stay on budget, and avoid costly surprises.

Transforming Old Spaces: Creative Renovation Ideas for Businesses

As businesses grow and evolve, their physical spaces should reflect that progress. Whether you’re running an office, managing a multi-use facility, or updating a commercial property, renovation offers an opportunity to do more than just repair, it’s a chance to transform. At Prairie Construction, we’ve seen firsthand how creative remodels can revitalize a building and breathe new life into the way people work and interact.

Here are some renovation ideas to inspire your next project:

Open & Flexible Layouts

Modern businesses thrive on collaboration, flexibility, and efficiency. Converting older, segmented floor plans into open layouts creates a more dynamic environment where teams can easily connect. Flexible spaces, such as movable walls or modular furniture, allow the same area to adapt to meetings, events, or quiet work.

Multi-Use Spaces

Commercial buildings today often serve more than one purpose. A retail location may double as a community hub, or an office may need space for training, client meetings, and social events. Remodeling with versatility in mind ensures your property remains relevant, functional, and welcoming for years to come.

Energy Efficiency Upgrades

Renovations aren’t just about aesthetics; they’re also an opportunity to lower long-term costs. Installing modern HVAC systems, energy-efficient windows, and LED lighting reduces operating expenses while creating a more comfortable environment for employees and clients alike.

Blending Modern Design with Character

Older buildings often have unique architectural details worth preserving. A thoughtful remodel can balance the charm of original brickwork, beams, or vintage accents with sleek, modern finishes. The result is a space that feels both timeless and fresh.

Technology Integration

Today’s businesses run on technology. Incorporating smart systems during renovation, like integrated conference room tech, high-speed connectivity, or smart lighting, future-proofs your space and enhances daily operations.

Improved First Impressions

The exterior of your building speaks volumes about your brand. Updating facades, entrances, or lobbies can dramatically impact how customers and employees perceive your business. A clean, modern, and inviting space sets the tone before anyone walks through the door.

Why Renovation Matters

Renovating an existing space is often more cost-effective than building new, but it also carries the added value of revitalization. The right updates can improve employee satisfaction, attract new clients, and maximize how every square foot of your property is used.

At Prairie Construction, we specialize in commercial remodels that bring both function and creativity to life. From office spaces to multi-use buildings, we partner with businesses to design and deliver renovations that align with your goals and reflect your brand.

The Benefits of Starting Commercial Construction in the Fall

When it comes to planning a commercial construction project, timing is everything. While spring and summer are often seen as the go-to seasons, fall might actually be the hidden gem of the construction calendar.

More Availability

By the time fall rolls around, the summer rush has usually slowed. That means construction teams like ours have more availability, which can lead to faster scheduling and a more personalized service.

Stable Weather Patterns

Fall weather in the Midwest is often more predictable than spring and summer, with fewer storms and consistent temperatures. That stability can help keep projects on schedule and reduce delays due to weather-related issues.

Cost-Efficient Planning

Starting in the fall allows you to complete prep work, foundational tasks, or indoor construction before winter. Then, when spring arrives, you’re ready to move full steam ahead, saving both time and money in the long run.

Beat the Spring Rush

Fall construction puts you ahead of the competition. By getting a head start, your business can be ready to open, expand, or launch services before others even break ground in spring.

At Prairie Construction, we’re ready to help you take advantage of the opportunities that come with building in the fall. Let’s plan now so you can hit the ground running in 2026.

Supporting Omaha’s Growth: How Construction Drives Economic Development

Omaha is growing fast! From revitalized neighborhoods to new business parks and expanded infrastructure, construction is at the heart of this progress. At Prairie Construction, we are proud to play a role in shaping a stronger and more vibrant city. But what does construction really do for economic development?

Job Creation

Construction projects directly create jobs, bringing skilled laborers and site managers to engineers and equipment operators. But it doesn’t stop there. Local suppliers, manufacturers, and logistics companies also benefit, helping to fuel the local economy even more.

Business Attraction and Expansion

Modern buildings and upgraded infrastructure attract new businesses. Whether it’s a retail space, office building, or industrial warehouse, construction creates the environment companies need to thrive and makes Omaha more competitive in attracting new investments.

Community Revitalization

Construction transforms outdated or underused spaces into productive, welcoming parts of the community. Revitalization efforts, especially in downtown and historic areas, help increase property values, reduce crime, and improve overall quality of life.

Long-Term Economic Impact

Every new development brings long-term economic value. From increased tax revenue to better roads, schools, and utilities, construction lays the groundwork for future generations to succeed

At Prairie Construction, we believe strong communities are built from the ground up. We are proud to support Omaha’s ongoing growth with every project we take on.

Importance of Pre-Construction Planning for Omaha Businesses

When it comes to commercial and industrial construction, a well-structured pre-construction plan is the foundation for success. Whether you are building a new facility, expanding your existing space, or renovating an office, investing in pre-construction planning can help streamline the process, control costs, and ensure that your project meets both your expectations and long-term business goals.

Cost Efficiency and Budget Control

One of the primary benefits of pre-construction planning is the ability to establish a clear budget and minimize unexpected costs. By assessing project scope, materials, labor, and potential challenges early on, businesses can make informed decisions that prevent costly adjustments later in the process.

Accurate Project Timeline

Delays can be detrimental to any business, especially in the commercial and industrial sectors where time-sensitive operations depend on efficient project execution. A well-planned pre-construction phase helps set realistic timelines, coordinates schedules, and ensures that every phase of the project aligns smoothly from start to finish.

Regulatory Compliance and Permitting

Navigating building codes, zoning laws, and permit requirements can be complex, but addressing these elements during pre-construction ensures that all necessary approvals are in place before construction begins. This proactive approach helps avoid delays, fines, or costly modifications due to non-compliance.

Risk Management and Problem Prevention

Every construction project comes with potential risks, from unforeseen site conditions to supply chain challenges. By identifying potential issues early and developing contingency plans, businesses can mitigate risks and avoid disruptions during construction.

Enhanced Collaboration and Communication

A successful construction project requires coordination among business owners, architects, engineers, and contractors. Pre-construction planning fosters clear communication and collaboration among all stakeholders, ensuring that expectations are aligned and that the project is executed efficiently.

Optimized Design and Functionality

For businesses investing in new or improved spaces, the design must align with operational needs. Pre-construction planning allows for thoughtful input on layout, space utilization, and energy efficiency, ensuring the final build supports both current and future business growth.

Understanding Your Insurance Coverage

The Omaha metro area has been hit by numerous devasting storms this season and many homeowners are still dealing with the aftermath.

The tornado that hit the Elkhorn area in late April left devastation in its path. Many homes were completely destroyed, leaving residents homeless and needing to rebuild their homes.

While most homeowners’ insurance policies will cover the cost of rebuilding damaged or destroyed homes, many people are discovering significant costs that are not covered. Debris must be removed before rebuilding can begin, and this cost is often not a covered expense for policies. Depending on the scope of the damage, this can be extremely costly.

Several recent rainstorms have caused significant property damage due to flooding. Damage can include flooded basements, damaged foundations, and collapsed garages and structures. Many insurance policies only cover certain water claims – be sure you know what is covered.

The lesson for homeowners – understand your insurance policy so you aren’t caught off guard by damage and destruction that is not covered.

Time to Build

We could see an increase of close to 10 percent in construction projects in 2023, according to the American Institute of Architect’s AIA Consensus Construction Forecast. And 2024 could see an additional increase of six percent. This is great news!

The construction industry, like most industries, slowed down during the pandemic. Labor shortages and supply chain issues posed additional challenges. But things are looking up! Unemployment is low, and there are many positions available in the industry.

Construction spending has been trending upwards this year, and is not showing signs of slowing. Projects that may have been put on hold during the pandemic are now being scheduled, and this is contributing to the brighter forecast as more businesses have returned to the office.

Are you ready to move forward with your project that has been on hold? Don’t wait any longer to reach out to the Prairie Construction team to get your renovation or new build on the schedule for 2023. We are looking forward to working and building with you!

Construction in Omaha is Booming

This week, Omaha Mayor Jean Stothert shared a major announcement about development projects in downtown Omaha.

A highlight from the mayor’s updates is the addition of a 3-mile streetcar lane from the University of Nebraska Medical Center campus to the riverfront. The streetcar is expected to alleviate parking issues in the booming downtown area and provide convenient transportation.

To make way for the streetcar, Mutual of Omaha is moving its headquarters from Midtown to the current site of the main Omaha Public Library on 14th Street between Farnam and Douglas. The new headquarters will be a 40-plus story skyscraper that could become the tallest building in Omaha.

The Prairie Construction team is excited about these developments, and the commitment to commercial growth in Omaha. In 2019, the Associated General Contractors of America identified Omaha as the nation’s fastest-growing construction market in the US. Construction projects in the Omaha metro area have not since slowed.

Omaha boasts a cost of living that is 7% below the national average. Transportation and logistics industries in the area have kept supply chain issues at less of an issue than other parts of the country, and business costs are lower than other regions. This makes Omaha an attractive location for commercial businesses and provides incentives for local businesses to stay here and grow.

Does your business need more space to accommodate your growth? Ready for an upgrade or renovation to your business? Now might be the time – make 2022 the year to commit to growth and development for your business. Contact the Prairie Construction team to plan your construction project!
